See how two robots unscrew and screw the drill spindles with surgical precision, exchanging skillfully used drill bits

Station for cleaning drill spindles and replacing worn drills:

A huge challenge of this project was an extraordinary precision, with which the robots were to operate . The first robot’s uneasy task was to unscrew the three elements of the spindle system and to pull out the drill bit. In the next step, all the elements were directed to the washer so that after cleaning and the drill bit exchange , the second robot would be able to screw them into one unit again.

Since the spindle system may have occurred in different variations, we were equipped with:

  • 2 variants of the drill chuck
  • 2 variants of the clamping nut
  • 8 variants of the collet
  • 200 variants of the drill bit , including the ones with an 1 mm diameter

System elements:

  • the robot, “dirty” side, unscrewing the drill bits
  • washer
  • the robot, “clean” side, screwing the drill bits
  • measurement system by Kelch to verify whether the drill bits are correctly embedded
  • transport system

A difficult task, previously carried out manually, was robotized, and therefore the efficiency, greater precision and a process repeatability were gained.
