A robot for unfolding carton box flaps and handing inserts:

A real challenge in this project was a large number of formats to serve. The smallest carton box was 300x150x145mm, while the biggest was 650x400x200mm. On top of that there were a few types of carton and it was necessary to handle inserts. Only a robot with an adequate tool was able to ensure the required flexibility.

Before the modernisation it was the only place in the process between the carton box forming machine and the packaging machine that was operated manually.

There were a couple of tasks to take care of:

  • pickup and correct orientation of an empty carton box
  • unfolding carton box flaps
  • placement of an insert
  • change of orientation of a loaded carton box and transfer to the sealer

The project was also interesting from the point of view of safety and ergonomics. The client wanted to have an option of switching to manual labour in case of failure or if the robot was to undergo service. That goal was attained, which also facilitated a start-up spread over time given the already mentioned number of formats.

The new robot allowed to increase the reliability of the entire 24/7 production process by eliminating the manual workplace, which originally seemed unfeasible.
